Elevate Philanthropy wrote an unusually honest job description and invited unconventional applications. This section takes them at their word.
Everything I have made for this application lives here, in public. That is not a stunt; it is alignment. Philanthropy at its best runs on openness: Elevate Philanthropy publishes the bulk of its client work so the whole ecosystem benefits, and argues that the best grantmaking is transparent about its reasoning. An application to an organisation like that should meet the standard it sets. So the reasoning, the prototype and the essay are all on the table, checkable, the way work in this field ought to be.

My strongest driver predates me by two hundred years. My great-great-great-grandfather was Hans Nielsen Hauge, the Norwegian lay preacher who walked thousands of kilometres across the country and, between sermons, founded or seeded some thirty enterprises: paper mills, printing works, salt works, fisheries, shipping. He did not build them to accumulate wealth. He built them because he saw capital as stewardship and enterprise as a way of lifting ordinary people into work and dignity, and he kept at it through repeated arrests and years of imprisonment for the trouble. The movement he left behind helped industrialise Norway from below.
His philosophy still founds companies. Hauge Micro Finance in Bergen runs training and microloans for entrepreneurs in Burundi on his exact model: skills, small capital, high ethical standards, local ownership. I notice, and it is hard not to, that assets plus training plus mentoring in the world's poorest places is also the precise bundle behind the top-ranked fund concept in Elevate Philanthropy's own Top New Funds evaluation. My family's oldest idea and this field's newest one are the same idea.
I grew up on a farm in that tradition, five generations on. Impact-driven innovation is not a career choice I made; it is the family trade.
Their four criteria answered in their order, the four things they say are hard about the job answered honestly, what Veterinærhåndboka's deliberately self-limiting business model says about the applicant, and the one criterion that cannot be evidenced with a link: the driver.
Read the essay →Words are cheap in an application; prototypes are not. A cause-agnostic orientation tool built on Elevate Philanthropy's Top New Funds taxonomy: eleven questions, three ranked conversations, every score decomposable, and the honesty to say "no confident match" when nothing fits.
